A must visit to the least-visited island of Alor. Alor Island, in East Nusa Tenggara province, is called as a hidden paradise of eastern Indonesia, yet the least visited area in Indonesia. In fact, Alor is a name pinned to the regency, the archipelago, as well as the main island of the archipelago. Despite its short name, the Alor islands hide a long list of splendours, from fascinating underwater wonders up to the unique culture of the highland people.

In fact, Alor is a name pinned to the regency, the archipelago, as well as the main island of the archipelago. Despite its short name, the Alor islands hide a long list of splendours, from fascinating underwater wonders up to the unique culture of the highland people. Our adventure started in Takpala Village, a traditional village in the south of Alor, 14 kilometres from Kalabahi. Kalabahi is the capital city of Alor which is super close to the main harbour that connects the boats crossing the eastern islands of Indonesia. Takpala ("tak" means barrier and "pala" means wood) Village is inhabited by the Abui Tribe. This tribe keeps their lifestyle in a traditional way, in a wooden house, either a Kolwat with no wall or Kamuarwat, the houses with walls, only for the privileged ones.
The trip continued to Kolana, 150 kilometres away from Takpala Village, on the other side of Alor Island. This was where we interacted with so many locals, the fishermen, the people in the traditional market, and the local tour guide
On the way back, we passed Mali Airport, a small airport in Alor Island with limited flight destinations, only to/from Bali and Timor. Near Mali Airport, you can find Sika Island. During the low tide, you can walk on the white-sand beach to the island. If you are feeling lazy, the fisherman's boat can be an option. You can enjoy the nice view of the cliff, overlooking Mali Beach, from Tanjung Dugong Cafe. Mali Beach is famous for its dugong fish, which is believed to have a friendship bond with the locals.
Following the recommendation of the locals, we went to Resto Mama, a restaurant serving local foods, with a scenery of the vast sea. The best menu of this restaurant is the sunset view. A truly perfect spot to absorb the feeling of serenity. This trip was amazing not only for the landscapes and the astounding panorama, but also the modest, humble, and warm hearted people in it.
